History of DJ Magic D:

My mother told me that when I was 1 or 2, I used to pull the pot lids out of the cupboard, place them on the floor, spin them around, hold my finger like a record needle and sing!  Music was the biggest most important thing to me as I was growing up.  Even as a little child I was mesmerized by music.  I would just sit and watch the record go round and round on the turntable, fascinated with the sound coming out of the speakers.

My very first "record" player was a 1971 Fisher Price Music Box... I was two years old when I got this baby!

Two years later... I graduated to a REAL record player, and I was already a "DJ".  Spinning tunes for my aunts/uncles and cousins on my "Close & Play" record player!

More "advanced" models showed up as I was growing up, and I was still keeping my family entertained with the music that came out of those little built in speakers.

Middle School.

I used to use my tape deck's pause button to remix songs!  In grade 7, with my friend Savvas, we used to have little competitions to see who could make the better remix of planet rock, using the pause button on our tape decks.  It was actually very innovative what we were doing back then considering our age.  For an explanation, send me an email!

My cousin Rudra and I started to do this afterwards, mixing and chopping Herbie Hancock's "Rock It" with the Reel to Reel player..... the wheels were set in motion for what was to follow!  The DJ Set-up!

My first "DJ" set-up looked like this (1984):

I was using two turntables WITHOUT PITCH CONTROL, and a Sony TAPE DECK to mix with.

One turntable was hooked up to the tape deck's left microphone input, the other to the tape deck's right microphone input.

I used the record levels on the tape deck to bring in the turntables, and my FINGER to control the pitch of the turntables in order to beat-match!

Those two records you see are "Holiday"-Madonna & "Billie Jean"- Michael Jackson!  My first Beat-Mix.

High School

Finally got turntables with Pitch control!

I remember going to school dances and just watching the DJ's spin.  The racks of Ashley Amps and "DBX" Processors with all the LED status lights flickering and dancing to the sound of the beat looked amazing.  It was a lightshow in itself!  Four Cerwin-Vega Earthquakes shook the gymnasium at Eastern Commerce, and the bass pounded into your chest!

Look, there they were... the stars of the show!!!  They were SUNSHINE SOUND CREW, gods to a teenager like me, flawlessly working the turntables and cutting up the mixes.  I decided at that moment....this was for me.  I wanted to come out of the basement, and play for the masses!

Some early days Set-Up Pictures

By 1985, at the age of 16, I was spinning at parties using 3 turntables, not many kids my age were doing that!

(I'm on the right.. DJ Yatz on the left)

My set-ups became more complex.  My room was know as "The Bass-ment"!

I was sporting 600 Watts of sound which powered Two Bass Bins, Two Tweeter Arrays, and FOUR more Tower Speaker Cabinets!

My DJ setup included 4 turntables and two mixers (yes, I used them all at once and I have video footage).

For those who remember... it was crazy, loud, and the bass made your vision blur at times!

There was even the "Bass-Bed", complete with a 12" woofer, firing into the mattress!

A sign in my room read: "If It's Too Loud...You're Too Old!"

Many school-skipping sessions were at my place, surprise surprise! *wink*

Spinning parties through high school... life was great!  I was making a name for myself with mixed tapes and spinning dances and house parties.

Post High School

At the age of 19 came the Bar gigs and Clubs.

In September of 1996, I entered a DJ Competition that CANAM Dance Music Exchange was hosting.  This was during Canadian Music week, and boy was I nervous!  I put together a set just 2 days before the competition (I entered last minute).  When I arrived, I wanted to leave... I looked at the other DJ's and said to myself...there's no way.  I was third last out of nine.  I did my set and at the end I got a standing ovation!  I walked over to the other side of the room to get a glass of water (the other contestant had started to spin).  When I turned around to go back to my seat, there was a line-up of people wanting to speak to me!  I was in awe!

The competition ended.... the third place winner was announced.... not me.  The second place winner was announced...not me.  (At this time, the whole room is looking in my direction).  I was really nervous with anticipation at this moment.  A girl in front of me whispered in my ear "It's going to be you".  The first place winner was announced....OH MY GOD...it WAS me!  I think time stood still as I heard my name being called..."Congratulations to our first prize winner...DJ Magic D" from Toronto.... The next thing I knew, I was being surrounded by people, and cameras.  I remember the rep from Denon Canada (Rick Johnson) handing me my prize....a brand new DJ CD Player!  It was the DENON 2000F, the industry standard at the time.  From that day on, I had fewer records to carry around. (DENON FOR LIFE BABY!)

I've recently purchased the cutting edge technology in digital music manipulation... Rane's Serato Scratch Live! (used by such names as DJ Jazzy Jeff among others.)  It is the new Industry Standard tool.  Being able to use my turntables again is like a dream come true!

The rest, as they say.........is history.

It's been over 17 years now...  a screaming crowd, and the love for music, will always give me the drive to continue my journey in this music wonderland.  I really do love what I do!!!
